A River Through Time
a hands-on historical re-enactment October 2nd & 3rd, 2010Saturday & sunday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Mountain men, overland trail emigrants in covered wagons, sheepherders, cowboys, gold miners, a blacksmith, a sutler and general store, wool spinners, and Civil War soldiers enthusiastically demonstrate their part in history all day Saturday and Sunday. The Civil War soldiers reenact skirmishes between the Union and the Confederacy and fire two Napoleon cannons hourly. You can visit with President Lincoln who is always happy to answer questions about his personal and political life. Historical characters are portrayed by enactors from all over the Pacific Northwest and many from right here in Gem County. This is a great place to get up close and interact with living history. Learn to send flag signals to army troops, talk to pioneers in their encampment, make butter, dip candles, rope a calf, make pioneer toys or try your hand panning for gold. Learn how mountain men lived off the land. Samples of the kinds of food they gathered and hunted are available for you to sample - you can even try roasted beaver tail! This is a free annual event sponsored by the Gem County Historical Society to celebrate the people who settled the Payette River between 1859 and 1946. Dress in costume if you have one, pack a picnic or eat at the site and bring the whole family out for an enjoyable day at the River Through Time.
